Tech Guide: Automated Material Handler

From general tech to AMH.

Automated Material Handler

A combination of engineering and technology, the AMH is the biggest resource here at the MPL.

The Automated Material Handler (AMH) is also known as the conveyor belt and Material Handling System (MHS); is part of the automated book drop. It starts on the North side of MPL with the book drop, passes over Administration and the Computer Lab and ends in the Circulation Workroom.

The AMH has many amazing features. It allows patrons to have the ability to return items whenever they want very quickly. It also helps our Circulation Staff to automatically sort which books go in which part of MPL.

What does the AMH look like?

Everyone who has works or visited MPL knows about the book drop and the AMH, but patrons and most employees only see either the Book Drop or the part in the Circ. Workroom. This is a short time lapse video put together by myself and Jorge Gonzalez, to provide exciteing behind the scenes of the automated book drop!

AMH Details

The AMH is a series of motors, bearings, break beam sensors, and belts. All these items work in unison with computer software to provide patrons a way for items to be returned to Circulation at any time of the day.

The AMH can also do the following:

  1. Sort items into pre-programmed bins to help shelvers return items to shelf.
  2. AMH can also check-in items that will reflect patron accounts quickly.
  3. Helps to figure out when items need to be sent to branches.
  4. Frees up time for staff to work on other tasks or projects.
